union discourse always really frustrates me because i think in the modern US unions are way too weak but people like to frame unions as this like always good avatar of the working people when, if theyre big enough to have any power, theyre just...yet another bureaucracy, whose interests may or may not align with yours, or with the common good, depending on the situation and issue.
This is why we need a free market for unions!
You say "#kinda joking kinda serious" in the tags, but that is entirely seriously what America needs. America's unions are extremely powerful state-mandated monopolies with coercive power over non-members. This makes them bad at representing or aligning with workers. America's unions are also weak because they are state-dependent organizations that ask state permission to go on strike. The state regulates with one hand and empowers with the other. This looks very weird to a lot of Europeans, who thought America was the free-market country.
